The Lord Is My Shepherd

"The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not be in want...Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." (Psalm 23:1, 6)

The most important man in my life for about twelve weeks was a fellow who wore a funny hat. We addressed the man in the funny hat as "Drill Sergeant". Every word that came out of that man’s mouth while in his presence was heeded as if it were life. The fifty guys in the barracks brushed teeth, showered, wrote letters, spit and ate only when the Drill Sergeant said to do so. If he yanked the freshly made bunk apart and threw it in the floor we dared not grin or be seen to breathe. Should he take the boots we polished for hours and tossed them out into the rain we watched as if it was a normal occurrence. The man controlled our lives and that was no error. You could say he was our shepherd.

It is difficult to relate to some person who is out in the peaceful pasture all day lounging under a shade tree watching a herd of sheep. But, it is not hard to relate to a drill sergeant or a supervisor. We are more accustomed to being told "when", "how", and "where" than we realize. Why is it then that human beings like you and me fight so hard against doing as God directs?

One Friday the company commander gave me a pass for the weekend. I was out on the road thumbing, heading for home. A truck slowed and stopped. To my horror it was the drill sergeant. "Hop in!" he commanded so I did. He drove me fifty miles toward home. Why? Because he just wanted to help me out.

The Lord is MY shepherd. He only wants the best for me and He cares for me. Every instruction He gives is to help me be a better me. Why should we resist when He only seeks good for us?

Today as you go through the day consider accepting the Shepherd’s leading with every decision.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. (John 14:27)

This is a story I came across years ago. The message is simple but bears thought. Think often about it today.

There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them.

One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for the peaceful towering mountains all around. Overhead was a blue sky fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell, and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall.

This did not look peaceful at all. But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest ...perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The King chose the second picture. Do you know why? "Because," explained the King, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."

God’s Wisdom: "But all who humble themselves before the Lord shall be given every blessing and shall have wonderful peace." Psalm 37:11

Worldly Wisdom: "For peace of mind, we need to resign as general manager of the universe."
