How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? (1 John 3.17 NRSV) There is a story – a little boy back in the "big" depression days was sent to buy a dozen eggs. Mom entrusted him with the dime for the eggs, it was all she had. The boy came out of the store with the "poke" (brown bag) of eggs tripped and the eggs all broke. He sat on the curb crying and a small crowd gathered trying to console the boy. A working man in overhalls listened to the poor and pitiful remarks then said, "I care a nickel’s worth, what about the rest of you?" The boy bought another dozen eggs and was able to return fifteen cents to his mother. Were any of them Christians? Who knows, it was just a story written in a book. The point is words are cheaper than actions. No matter how much or how little you have God expects more from us than words when we encounter hurting people. Every hurting person we encounter in our lives is an opportunity to be the hands, the feet, the eyes and the ears of our Lord. If we are God’s children we do more than talk. God’s Wisdom: What profit will a person have if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Mark 8:36 NASV Worldly Wisdom: "Life ends when you stop dreaming, hope ends when you stop believing, love ends when you stop caring, friendship ends when you stop sharing..." (unknown)
