Jesus teaching in the temple. But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Phil. 4:19 "I need" is best translated "I want". So often we specify what we want as a need. Just today I was thinking "I need" a new plasma tv. The reality is the tv in my den works just fine. I want a new tv but clearly do not need one. If you really think about "need" you find you have very, very few. Food, shelter, security and someone to care about you are the basic needs. God is more than capable of providing those it’s just we "want" more than basic needs met. Somewhere in the not too distant past we came to believe we are "owed" more than basic needs. It could be we saw someone with something we thought should be ours or at least due us. Remember that commandment, "thou shall not covet"? We aren’t due anything and what others have has nothing to do with us. Paul was able to write, "no matter what state I am in I’ve learned to be content". He wasn’t talking about North Carolina but rather his status in life. We live for God and serve Him. Our wants get in the way of that service. The old monks of centuries past took vows of silence and poverty that they could be wholly committed to God and His service. Perhaps today we need to spend more time considering what are our needs and what are our wants. You can be sure God will provide for your basic needs and will bless you with what you need to serve Him and accomplish the tasks He sets before you. Use your blessings wisely for His glory.
