On Our Knees

O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker. Psalm 95:6

A back is a good thing when it works. You can bend over and tie your shoe or pick up a penny from the parking lot. But when the old back isn’t working you do good just to shuffle your feet. There is no way to escape the pain; even breathing is a chore.

Some years ago there was a lady who never missed church. Adele suffered from the worst forms of arthritis. All the joints in her fingers were replaced. Her hips, knees and elbows and every other joint was inflamed and painful. Yet, no matter how much she hurt, she struggled to church. Just looking at her made me hurt. One Sunday morning during the invitation she struggled from the third pew on my right and came forward and knelt to pray. Several people hurried and kneeled beside her to help her. She told me afterwards, "I just had to kneel before God one more time while I was able."

It is said, "The proud never bend a knee and never know the blessings of the Lord." As you read God’s word you come across people who would throw themselves to the ground. They did so because God was holy and they were so sorrowful over their sins. When we see God, as He is – holy and righteous we must fall to our knees.
