SINK LIKE A ROCK

Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. Luke 9:44 (KJV)

On the counter of the Crackerbarrel was one of those things you drop a coin into the container for "Jerry’s Kids". The coin sinks in water past several obstacles. It is entertaining to see how the coin flips, dives and skids. But it sinks to the bottom nonetheless.

The King James uses the word "sink" in the verse above. The New Internal Version says, "listen carefully" instead of sink. Consider that Jesus is saying the same thing in both versions, which is to listen very carefully to what He is saying, let it sink in. Sink is a visual word. Just as a coin sinks in a container of water so He wants His words to sink into the souls of His disciples.

There are times things are said to us that we do not what to hear. "Your car is going to cost $$$$ to repair and will be in the shop at least two weeks more depending on the availability of parts." The mechanic stated. That is something you would not want to hear and it takes a few moments for the words to sink in and the implications to hit home.

Jesus told His disciples He was going to be betrayed. The verse then says, they did not understand". The words did not sink in!

The word meditate is not one of my favorites. It conjures up images of the "60’s" for me of people practicing eastern religions such as Hinduism. But, we need to learn to meditate or Jesus’ teachings. A casual reading only touches the surface of what He has for us. To meditate, to be in deep thought is to let His teaching SINK into your soul. Today is a good day to take a verse or a few verses and think on them all day long. Instead of reaching for the cellphone, spend the time allowing His teaching to sink into your soul.
