Your Debt Is Forgiven

Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little." Luke 7:47

The mortgage meltdown crisis that struck last year created havoc not only in business but also in families. Not only were those who had variable rate loans affected but also so were those with fixed loans. The gasoline prices of the previous summer had drained many people’s savings. With the home crisis came increased interest rates on credit cards. When all was added to the family budget there wasn’t enough for many to pay the mortgage. Houses were not selling and many found themselves in foreclosure. Help was promised by the federal government but what came was too little and too late.

We like happy endings but there are few associated with the current economic chaos. We listen to the sad stories of family and friends and feel helpless at their suffering. The best we can offer are our prayers. If it were in our power we would forgive their debt.

Jesus said to the woman, "Your sins are forgiven". He explained that her sins were forgiven because she loved HIM much. The "Him" is missing from the verse but it is inferred because she anointed His feet with expensive oil and used her hair to clean His feet. Surely, that was love. He said, "Her sins were many". She was well aware of her many sins and the love and gratitude she showered on Jesus is evidence of her grateful, loving heart.

Verse 50 says, "Thy faith has saved thee, go in peace." We are no different that the woman in that our sins are many. Let us be like her and take them all to Jesus and be as loving toward Him as she was.
