Love's Test

Jesus teaching in the temple.

How blessed is anyone who is not offended by me!" Luke 7:23 (International Standard Version)

There was once a boy so embarrassed by his mother’s looks that he would tell people he had no mother. When he grew older he left home and went far way. Years passed and word reached him that his mother was dying and wanted to see him. At first he refused and said, "I have no mother!" Then he was told his mother would be leaving everything to him. He said, "So!" meaning he wasn’t concerned about what she might have. A certified letter arrived weeks later from an attorney. The letter informed the son that all the trust his mother had received from her grandfather would be going to his cousin. The amount was listed as just under eleven million dollars.

The Scripture just before our verse for today tells that two disciples of John came to see Jesus and ask Him if He was "the One" that God sent as Messiah. Jesus healed people right in front of them. He then told them to report what they witnessed. He did not tell them, "I am He" but only worked miracles. It was left to them to decide for themselves if He was the promised One. If they believed they would be blessed and if they did not they would be doomed.

Jesus said, "Whoever is ashamed of me and my words I will be ashamed of when I come in my glory". Let us not be offended to call Him Lord as well as Savior. The blessing of God we will forsake will not be known fully until we stand before Him when this life is done. Heaven is far too precious to lose just because believing seemed foolish in the eyes of friends or family.

Let us this day rejoice in Jesus. The true test of love is loving when others are looking.
