How Much Do You Owe?

He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water." Revelation 14:7 (NIV)

Have you ever heard, "God won't give me more than I can handle. There are times I just wish He didn't trust me quite so much."

How much is enough? You’ve heard it said that "money can’t buy happiness" but then someone adds, "please give me some and I’ll try". There is story after story of rich folk who have said all their wealth hasn’t brought them happiness. And of late there are many stories of lottery winners and sweepstakes winners who wind up on welfare. You are probably saying, "That would never happen to me!" How much would be enough to keep you from spending it all? So, how much glory is enough for God?

Verse six says that an angel flew in the midst of Heaven and said in a loud voice what we read in verse seven. "Fear God and give Him glory". How much glory or praise should you be giving God?

And, by the way, "fear" is not like you are afraid of God but rather you reverence Him, respect Him and are in awe of Him. There is a verse in Psalms (8:4) that asks, "What is man that Thou art mindful of him?" Our reverence (fear) is that we become so keenly aware of God’s power that we bow down before Him but not out of fear because He Loves Us and wants the best for us and that doesn’t mean harming us.

Rapid-fire lightening of a thunderstorm is beautiful. Only a fool walks out into the midst of such a storm with a golf club raised high overhead. Most people even stand back from a window to watch rather than press their noses against the glass. There is a sense of danger even at a distance. Maybe call it respect rather than danger. If you watch the same storm on television you still are aware of the danger even though you are perfectly safe from the lightening. "Fear God" is hard to get a handle on but maybe it is like watching lightening at a distance.

God is as holy as He is powerful. We worship Him because of His power, because of His holiness and because of His love. The answer to the question, "How much is enough when we give Him glory" is simple. We give as much as Jesus gave to us. He gave His all for us, we are to give our all to Him – that is the glory due Him!

Phillipians 2:5 says, Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus". Jesus loved the Father with all His heart, mind and life. In everything He saw God, with every breath he lived for God and every thought was God connected. Let us have the Mind of Christ this day – "Fear God and give Him glory".
