Marriage is a wonderful institution, so the joke goes, and anyone who gets married belongs in an institution. The truth is that marriage is wonderful when you marry the person God prepares for you. Here again patience is required.

The writer of Romans (Paul) is saying that before Jesus the Jews were married to the law. Now, because Jesus has died for sin, those who believe in Jesus are no longer married to the law. They are in fact married to Jesus. That is good news because no person could keep the law. It was like living with a spouse who was always belittling, threatening and beating.

Years ago someone gave us a "welcome to our home" sign. An old couple, both on their canes, going up a hill to a little church. Faye and I pray that is our future – together! Marriage is wonderful with the right person and I would rather have Jesus than the law. How about you?
