The year is 1779; the location is off the coast of Florida in the Atlantic. The English frigate, Medusa, sights a French frigate engaged with a small brig. As the Medusa bears down on the battle, the brig is set fire and sunk by the French. Seizing on the opportunity of a distracted foe, the Medusa attacks and captures the French frigate Morgador. Young Lieutenant Donland is assigned prize master of the captured frigate and ordered to sail her over two thousand miles with a skeleton crew to the island of Antigua. Donland is given the older and more experienced master’s-mate Jackson as second in command.

To complicate the task, a young boy found aboard the French vessel is to be safeguarded and handed over to the Admiral in Antigua. The French have risked war with England to capture the brig on which the boy was a passenger. In an effort to hide their deeds and secret, the French tried to kill the boy rather than allow his capture.

Command is a far greater challenge than Donland anticipates. Caught in the doldrums with no wind, the ship’s crew looks to him for leadership. Death creeps upon them as another French Frigate is sighted. All hope seems lost until Donland uses guile and initiative to wrench certain victory from the enemy. The furious battle leaves the Morgador seriously wounded. Donland wills the ship to a small island to make repairs.

While anchored in a small cove, a sloop dares to enter the anchorage and is captured. Captain Howard, and American, knows more about the wounded boy than he dares to tell. With the added intrigue comes a beautiful and precocious woman. Donland, with no knowledge of the ways of women, is soon lost in another quagmire as he is enamored with the beautiful Nancy.

What Others Say about Dr. Comer’s writing:

Perry writes solid plots that keep the reader turning the pages. His stories are peopled with well developed, strong characters with which the reader can identify. His characterization is excellent, and his characters are engaging and quite easy to become emotionally involved with while you root for them to make it through whatever adventure he has planned for them. Leslie Hodges, Managing Editor, Wings E-press.

Good writing (The Treacherous Prize). Reader is taken into the action a la Moby Dick. Diane Bloem, Zondervan Manuscript Review Editor

Mr. Comer spins a tight and exciting tale. Josh's courage is inspiring and the ending is a happy one. House of Snakes rates my highest recommendation. Every public and school library should order a copy. Parents, I encourage you to buy this book for your children. The message is outstanding. Laurel Johnson Midwest Book Review
